Restoring the Future: YouTubers and GM team up to save a rare EV1

An unlikely collaboration has been sparked between YouTube mechanics and General Motors engineers after a chance discovery at a Georgia impound lot, bringing one of the most significant electric vehicles in history back to life.
The car in question is the GM EV1, the first modern mass-produced electric vehicle from a major car manufacturer. Introduced in 1997, the EV1 was never sold to the public, only leased, and most were recalled and crushed. Only a few non-driving examples remained in museums until last year, when a long-lost EV1 appeared at auction and sold for over $100,000.
The buyer, private collector Billy Caruso, teamed up with the YouTube channel Questionable Garage to restore the car in a project dubbed "V212", with the aim of having it running by the 30^(th) anniversary in November 2026.
GM President Mark Reuss took note of this endeavour and invited the team to the company's Technical Centre in Warren, Michigan. There, GM's design fabrication team carefully disassembled a donor EV1 to provide parts for the restoration. The YouTubers also met original EV1 engineers and toured GM's heritage collection, which included the Electrovair II and the Impact concept car, the latter of which led to the EV1.
The EV1 pioneered technologies that are now standard in electric vehicles, including heat pumps, blended regenerative braking, by-wire controls, low-rolling-resistance tyres and aluminium space frame construction. GM says, "The EV1 set in motion everything we're doing in electric right now."
Once destined for the crusher, VIN 212 is now at the centre of a unique partnership that is preserving a pivotal piece of automotive history.
