Toyota unveils development prototypes for new GR GT supercar and race car

TOYOTA GAZOO Racing has unveiled two new model prototypes: the GR GT, a road-legal supercar, and the GR GT3, a race car built to FIA GT3 specifications. Both vehicles are still in development, with an expected launch date of around 2027.
The GR GT is set to become the brand's new flagship sports car. The focus of its development has been on achieving a low centre of gravity, lightweight construction with high rigidity, and advanced aerodynamics. It will be powered by a newly developed 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 engine paired with a hybrid system targeting over 650 horsepower. Toyota states that the car will feature the company's first all-aluminium body frame.

The GR GT3 is a racing car derived directly from the GR GT and built to compete in the international customer racing category. It shares the same core engineering principles and V8 engine as the road car, with modifications made to comply with GT3 competition regulations.

Professional drivers and Toyota Chairman Akio Toyoda, who participates under the pseudonym "Morizo", were involved in the development process. According to the company, new methods were employed, including the extensive use of driving simulators in the early stages of the design process, alongside real-world testing at circuits such as Fuji Speedway and the Nürburgring.

The GR GT and GR GT3 represent Toyota's latest attempt to create "ever-better motorsport-bred cars", with the aim of passing on engineering expertise from previous projects, such as the Lexus LFA, to a new generation.
