Ford has reportedly assured its European dealers that new passenger cars are on the way, which is good news for a market that has been left confused by the brand’s recent line-up. However, given Ford’s recent track record (cough, the electric Capri), the question remains: Will these new models actually appeal to European drivers?
The current lineup is confusing
Ford's current European offerings are a patchwork of:
SUVs (Puma, Kuga)
Rebadged Volkswagen EVs (Explorer, Capri)
American imports (Mustang, Mach-E, Bronco)
The discontinuation of the Fiesta and Focus, once European mainstays, still leaves a gap in Ford’s line-up. Meanwhile, the electric Capri - a bloated SUV with little connection to its iconic namesake - has been met with mockery and disappointment.
Dealers demand real cars!
According to Automobilwoche, Ford’s European dealers welcomed the news about the new models. One dealer stated:
'We need new cars - and not just electric ones.'
However, after the Capri debacle, scepticism is warranted. Will Ford deliver proper European cars, or just more rebadged electric vehicles and niche imports?
Ford must reconnect with European tastes. If the next 'new' model is just another soulless crossover with a classic badge, buyers may finally turn their backs on the Blue Oval altogether.
