BMW unveiled the latest generation of the 3 Series, which includes a fully electric version for the first time. Models with internal combustion engines will continue to be available; the range includes petrol, mild-hybrid and plug-in hybrid options.
The new 3 Series is styled in BMW's ‘Neue Klasse' design language. The model bears clear visual similarities to the current 5 Series, particularly in terms of its proportions and clean lines, but features a more futuristic front end where the kidney grille and twin headlights merge into a single unit.
Two electric versions will be launched first. The i3 50 xDrive delivers 469 hp and offers a claimed WLTP range of 912 km thanks to a 108.7 kWh battery. A smaller i3 40 xDrive is also available, with 374 hp and a range of 710 km. Both use 800-volt technology and can be charged at up to 400 kW. Under ideal conditions, +/- 425 km of range can be added in ten minutes.
The flagship model with an internal combustion engine is the M350 xDrive, powered by a 3.0-litre six-cylinder engine producing 443 hp with mild-hybrid support. It accelerates to 100 km/h in 4.1 seconds and introduces a ‘Drift Moment' function that directs power exclusively to the rear wheels.
Inside, the 3 is equipped with BMW's now familiar Panoramic iDrive system, featuring a 17.9-inch central display and projections within the driver's field of vision.
The new 3 Series is expected to arrive in European showrooms in 2027.
